...since Rosenblum Winery is about 20 minutes away from where I live, I've been attending their quarterly open houses about once a year for the past 10 years.Their fruit-forward style of zinfandels have been among my favorites. They make probably 30 different wines, many vinyard-designated zins, and their open houses are always fun with music and good hors'd'ouvres.
Last year the winery was acquired by Diageo, a publicly traded company, for a little over $100 million.
This time, I was somewhat disappointed in the open house I attended on Sunday.
Not only was the wine not as good as in past years, it's becoming very overpriced. The average price for one of their zins was about $35 with one of their reserve zins going for $65!
I ordinarily buy over a case at their open houses, since they offer a 20% discount on any purchases. This time it was 4 bottles.
In this economy, I can't see how their pricing strategy makes a lot of sense.
