This is after a little processing with the Nik Color Efex plug ins for Photoshop and Neat Image for noise reduction.First I adjusted levels in Pshop to get the contrast up. This brought out too much noise, so I filtered the result in Neat Image. Next I used Color Efex to soften the skin a bit more, blur the focus around the edges and tone the image. There were a couple of other small tweaks which I'm afraid I don't recall now, which yielded up "Kate-a-Lisa". Not a contest winner by a long shot, but not a bad pic to hang on the family album wall in the hallway.
Anyway, the point is you can salvage some pretty crappy shots with a little experimentation.
Follow Ups:
Burning in her arms and neck. Theory being good portraiture has nothing brighter than the face . I used curves for rest & cropped for that rule of thirds moving her head more to the right. I wouldn't have posed her arms in such a matter first off.

That's what gives a portrait life.
