Been reading a lot of reviews of digital cameras in this price range; mainly interested in point & shoot right now but later might try advanced features. But of these two which would be the best value considering pix quality, ease of use, fun factor as well as advanced features(manual)? Or would something else be worth checking into. Just now getting my feet wet again in this field and so much has changed(my first /only dig. camera was several yrs ago with a Fuji 1.5 meg. unit and that was high tech back then).
Thank you,
John

My best suggestion is to look at this web site and all will become clear.
I have the Nikon 4300 and like it very much. I have no direct experience with the A80, but I, like you, researched it and to my mind is outstanding-- a "can't miss."I purchased the Nikon in part because it allows manual settings for shutter speed, aperture, etc. I found myself never taking advantage of those features. When I decide that I want to control those features manually, I will use the 4300 as a learning tool, then upgrade.
I would say that your choice is on the basis of cost and ease of use. Personally, I do not like the A80's flip-to-the-side monitor: opening/closing is just one more thing to do and I would probably break it. On the other hand, I really don't know how well the A80 compares with the Nikon in terms of battery usage-- an important consideration for me.
Then again the Nikon 4300 has additional lenses that can be attached. I got a 4300 for Christmas because I decided that additional lenses made more sense for me over manually adjusting shutter speed and aperature settings. And it does have override settings for automatic aperature/shutter choices like near-far field, portraits, sports & such. Damn, even on my 35MM Minolta I almost never use the purely manual settings but I do play with lenses and filters a bit.
I have heard that the A80 would be the way to go.

I just got an A60 for christmas. I'd definitely go with the A80 over the Coolpix. The Canon A series is practically the only digicam outside the Big-Money SLRs that actually allows you to manually adjust Shutter Speed, Aperture, and has shutter-priority and aperture-priority modes. Even with the 2.0MP, I'm able to take very good quality photos that I'm extremely pleased with, for my purposes. Definitely get the A80.
Plus Manual Exposure Control for unlimited creative possibilities, including a 60 second BULB feature for longer exposures. From an article on the Nikon...don't know about the aperture.
