Why the Phantom, you may ask? Well, being a huge fan of Andrew LLoyd Webber I just coldn't skip reading the source for the most amazing musical ever produced. [Actually the musical is a piece of crap, I just had to grab something to read on a bus and this was what I grabbed]
It turned out to be a cute little thriller that climaxed in the last 50-60 pages, as most thrillers do.
The style is something that used to be called a boulevard novel, the characters are sketchy, including the protagonists.
What I didn't expect to find was the description of the famous Opera Garnier, its customs and inner workings. Thank god it was there. Otherwise this little paperback would've ended up in the waste-paper bin much sooner than it did, for I have finished the whole thing.Next up, Graham Greene's A BURNT-OUT CASE.

Follow Ups:
Try and see the silent film version of this movie with Lon Cheney. You will quickly figure out what all the fuss was about.I'm suprised that no one has picked up on the seeming connection between Lon and Dick Cheney. Again, if you see the silent Phantom, the similarities will shock and awe.
