Depends on picture content. On my basic 2M Canon, highest res settings, pics take from 400K (winter scenery) to 1200K (PCB closeup). Average is around 80 pics on a 64M card (incidentally, battery life is also 80-90 takes) - same as the camera manual says.
If you have any particular camera in mind, download user manual on the net, see if it has these estimates.
