I don't know who owns it...thought it was a publicly traded company.
Costco spent millions of dollars in the state of WA to be allowed to sell liquor. Prior, it was only sold in state run liquor stores.
The measure failed once or twice. They paid to put it on the ballot again, but reframed their argument. Well, they paid someone to reframe it as "Why is Wa State in the liquor business.?"
The vote did pass but most people had no idea what they were voting for of course.
The result is the alcohol business in the state being upended with many consequences that affect those of us who make and sell alcohol (and none of them positive) But to the average consumer, all state stores were closed and liquor taxes were raised to offset the state losses. We now have the second highest liquor tax in the country. Luckily I can be in Oregon in 5 minutes.
