Wine Asylum

Opened some wines that had been laid down.

First, I recently got a wine club offering from Carol Shelton Winery for some 2002 zins they had put to the side for just this reason. Both have held up as far as color and fruit but I've found both to be very soft, as in very little to no tannin. Not to my taste.

Secondly, went to a friend's birthday dinner and brought a bottle of 2008 Rivers-Marie Napa Cab. Excellent bottle of wine! Complex nose, beautiful color, layers of flavor without being overly fruity. Kind of like California cabs were back before the Australian influence. We also tried a Silver Oak Sonoma Cab and a Chappallet Pritchard Hill Cab. Both of these were of the fruit bomb variety and I noticed the other tasters kept coming back to the Rivers-Marie. But in the defense of these two wineries, both were bought from Last Bottle so I'm sure they weren't their best offerings.

Lastly, I opened a 2010 Heritage wine from Bedrock. Good but it too had lost all tannin and seemed a bit too fruit bombed. First comment from the Wife was "kind of fruity for Bedrock isn't it". And the last half glass was a cloudy mess.

So again, IMHO most currently made wines are better had in the first 2 or 3 years from release.
