Asking the restaurant staff for a recommendation is a bit like handing them your wallet and telling them to take what they want. Yet, people do it. Maybe it's a "prestige" thing psychologically motivated to impress their dinner partners or other people, kind of like flaunting a bunch of credit cards while looking for the "right one" to make people think you're well-off, even though all of those retailer-based cards are free.
I've asked for a wine "flight" recommendation, and then follow up with: "How much is that?" I don't need to spend no $50 for five half-glasses of wine! Too many people are too insecure/intimidated to ask the price. Then they get burned.
