...when I read Wine Spectator earlier in the year and they rated the 2008 Willamette Valley Oregon pinot noirs 95-100 points, I knew I had to take a trip up there to check them out.
So we went last weekend and tasted at seven different, mostly highly rated wineries.
There were not that many 2008s to taste.
Two wineries had already sold most of theirs and weren't tasting them.
At one you had to join their wine club to get the few left in the quarterly automatic shipments. This one had a reserve pinot noir priced at $150.
Two of the wineries hadn't even released their 2008s yet.
In most of the wineries we tasted some excellent wine, and many excellent pinot noirs, a few from 2008, some from 2007 and even a couple from 2006.
None that I'd rate close to 95 points, though. One which rated 90 pts by the current WS tasted like Kool-Aid to me - very thin and fruity.
The Willamett Valley is gorgeous, unspoiled and there are some world class wineries and restaurants.
So while we found some nice pinot noirs, those 95-100 pointers proved to be very elusive.
Guess I'll keep looking.
