They are growing a lot of zinfandel and a number of new wineries have popped up there.
I had no idea how many until I got a wine map at the Visitor's Center - there are now 37 wineries in the small rural town of Lodi, off of Hiway 99.
Adjacent to the Visitor's Center is the Wine and Roses Hotel and Spa that reminds me a little of the Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa. A one hour massage is $125 - rivaling prices in Sonoma.
We stopped at a few of the wineries and tasted - many were pretty rustic.
Some of the better zins were going for $28 to $42 which seemed a little pricey for a Lodi appellation.
Guess I've become a wine snob.
Or my cellar is little overstocked right now.
