I just went to a local steakhouse, not my usual cup of tea, and they had a pretty good wine selection, approx. 125. As a person who frequents wine stores I realized that they were 250-400% over RETAIL.
Why do restaurants feel they have to stick it to you for the wine? Is it because the average patron doesn't know the original cost? Pure greed? Because they don't turn it enough?By the way, I noticed that less than half of the tables were buying wine, especially by the bottle.
Here in Houston we have a couple of high-end restaurants, with good to great wine lists, that are letting it be known that they only mark-up 75-100%. Practically every table has a bottle of wine on it.
We also have a couple of restaurants that allow and encourage you to bring your own wine. They're packed practically every night.
