All I can say is that it is funny, creative and very intertaining walk through the world's wines. The chapters are short and it is an easy read. He writes about wine like a writer instead of a wine critic and really knows his stuff.
When he devotes a chapter to Oregon's pinot noirs and contrasts two wines by comparing one to Clapton covering Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" (lacking in real bluesey substance) and the other as his "Layla", he had me hooked.
I just wish I'd picked the book up in the year 2000 when it was published because his recommendations would have been more timely. As it is, it's a real education on just about every important varietal.
