I couldn't agree with you more. If you must rinse, use the new wine to do so (you don't need to throw the rinse away - unless you are truly a purist). As far as mixing goes, there is not harm with experimentation. After you do it a few times, you probably won't continue. Although I notice some people do this when they are dissatisfied with a wine, or with both wines. They mix them up just to see.

Of course, there is a good reason why your see very few zinfandel blends on the market. And it's not because winemakers are shy about experimentation.
