I'm in the same situation right now. The dpreview.com website seems to be useful for the variety of cameras reviewed. Olympus has a model C-5500 that may be what I'm looking for and had some favorable comments on the dpreview site. There's a Panasonic that lists around $600 with a 10x zoom and image stabilization. Email me if you have found anything interesting.
