what digital camera?

first time to post usually on the audio side. looking to get a camera that is reliable,easy to use and takes good pictures.i know nothing about digital cameras so pros and cons for each model would help me make a better dcision. i have seen some nikon coolpix & some cannon sureshots but don't want to buy just on a sales persons say so. price range up to $500.
