A friend of mine has the compact and lightweight Optio S4 and is damn good, excellent pictures, lots of features and SOTA optical system, but I think it's above your budget, perhaps you may find one used or a lower model can also fit your requirements. I like it better than the Canon and Nikon some friends have. If I were looking for a digital camera I'd take one of these.
