...between audio/music listening and wine tasting. With both your sensory apparatus and ability to distinguish subtle differences improves greatly with experience.
However, blind forced-choice listening seems to get in the way of identifying subtle audible differences - where blind wine tasting doesn't seem to have any negative effect on perception of differences. Must be due to the different parts of the brain involved.
The only consistent way to "verify" cable differences, or any other subtle audible difference, IMO, is to listen for a few hours over a couple of days. Then match levels and switch. Repeat.
Wine is much simpler.
