Hello,I work at The Barnacle Historic State Park in Miami, Florida and for
the past 5 years we have been holding a regatta on the weekend of
Washington's Birthday to commemorate the organization of the area's first yacht club,The Biscayne Bay Yacht Club was founded by yacht designer, Ralph
Middleton Munroe in 1887. Among his many talents, Ralph was famous for his shoal-draft yacht designs (i.e. the 28' "Egret") and for building a unique house in 1891 called the Barnacle. He also loved the sport of yacht racing. The yacht club began with a race on Washington's Birthday in 1887. The park will commemorate this date by holding a regatta for additional boats (sharpies, gaff-rigs etc) at noon on Saturday February 2, 2004 on Biscayne Bay just offshore of The Barnacle.
In past years we have had up to 16 boats participate in the race.
Boats such as bulleyes, Bahama dinghies, mudhens, home-made wooden boats and sharpies of various lengths have entered. There is no requirement that the boats are wooden. For more information or to receive a race packet, interested parties
