Hi John,Check out boat-links.com under “Boat & Ship Design Software.†This is a good place to start to track down what you are looking for. There are numerous programs listed - from the simplest and cheapest, to the most comprehensive and most expensive. There is even some freeware available that might be sufficient to meet your needs. Many of these software vendors also offer “lite†versions of their programs at greatly reduced prices, often under $500. This might very well fit the bill and you can upgrade later if want to pursue computer design further.
It would be worthwhile to explore some of these sites. They often provide on-line demos of their products and free evaluation versions of their software that you can download for a 30 day trial period. But beware, some of this stuff is pretty spectacular and, before you know it, you could be forking out thousands of dollars for all the bells and whistles you suddenly find you can’t live without!
Also try and save at least a few bucks for a 2D CAD program. You will need it for detailing the hull. None of the design programs that I know of offer an integral drafting program, so make sure that any programs you purchase are compatible with each other and that you can export and import DXF or DWG files between them.
Hope that helps,
Don
