Re: 1978 Johnson 7.5

The shifter rod has a coupling from the upper housing to the lower unit. The shifter rods have circular grooves which lock the rods into a clamp type coupler by the clamp/coupler bolts. You should have a small oval inspection hole in one side of the upper portion of the lower leg. You will gain access to the clamp bolts there. Remove the lower bolt since it is easier when reinstalling the lower leg to find a larger hole with a smaller object, then with the same socket and extension, reinstall the bolt - not too tight - the clamp is bronze.

Reinstallation of the lower unit may be a bit trickey and require some thought when it comes to reinserting the shifter rods into the clamp - use the shift lever and place the lower unit into gear (pull the shifter rod and exert rotating pressure on the prop to keep the dogs together) and you will need to rotate the splined drive shaft to align with the power head female spline.
