Old Idea's For Homemade outboard

Question. Has anyone ever just attached a prop to a shaft then attached said shaft to horizonal shaft small motor and mounted it on a transom and got some kinda of data they would like to share.

I guess I'm kinda leaning towards making my self a poor mans go-devil outboard.
