I've used the Leica and I liked it because it looked and handled like a "real" camera as opposed to the often quirky user interface found on some digital cameras. Yeah, the Leica lens is nice, but the real difference in film cameras between a Leica lens and a Japanese lens is the emphasis on contrast and image color - and not just sharpness. Whether this translates into something meaningful in the digital image realm is, to me (at this point) an unknown.

I didn't use the Leica long enough to see if the Leica lens hallmarks of contrast and image color really could be seen when compared to a similar (Panasonic) camera. At this point in time, when digital is evolving rather rapidly, I'd suggest you look at several different cameras and choose the one you like best for functionality. I don't see digital being a long-term investment (like a film camera), for some time. It will be a transient piece of equipment like a computer until the imagers and associated electronics reach a plateau point.

But, even with film cameras that is never quite true. As the owner of a Nikon F and a Nikon N90, I can tell you there is a world of difference between these two cameras even though the same film can be loaded in either.
