Any Nikon N80 shooters here?

I wonder if mine has a problem. The grid and focusing display is supposed to turn red in low light situations. Mine flashes red in low light but immediately fades to black regardless of ambient light conditions. Even in a dark room with the only light coming from an adjacent room.

Is this correct, or should they stay red as the manual seems to imply?
