Scanning slides--image cutoff

We just bought an Epson 3170 Photo scanner, and when scanning 35mm slides it seems to cutoff a mm or 2 on every border of the slide. The slide holder is not the problem.
I crop my images very carefully in the viewfinder and of course want the complete image. Any suggestions/insights? I suppose I could remove the film from the holder, but the potential for damage and overall hassle seems a bit high.
