I've also taken a lot of self portrait shots... especially when hiking. I really want to make an effort to take more pictures of people. My main discomfort comes from taking them of strangers as I don't really like the idea of sneaking pictures of people... or asking them.
About the sepia, thanks, now that some time has passed I think it works too. It was suggested by someone at dpreview that I try greatly lowering the saturation and trying different single color tones as an alternative to the sepia but I haven't messed with that yet.
