Right now my father is shopping for some digital cameras and he can get great deals on these two cameras. Both are 5 MP and have a bunch of features, but it seems to me that the Nikon has better image quality (in the 5 MP mode) but has much crappier firmware. It's also an older model and it has autofocus problems at lower light levels (plus my father doesn't like that it looks and feels like a prosumer 35 mm camera). The Canon OTOH is much more sleek and digital-looking. It also seems to have autofocus problems but not quite as severe as the 5400. The image quality seems to be lower compared to the Nikon, especially with highlights and the "purple fringe" problem and I've read mixed things about it from people (one person said his 4-year old 2 MP HP camera had better image quality!). It's firmware seems much better implimented too and the design appeals to my father. Right now I'm leaning towards the Nikon but I'd like to hear your thoughs. We'd probably using it mainly as a point and shoot, though I'd like to learn about the manual options in the future. Thanks!
