You can use Adobe Gamma, better than nothing but not by much. The way to do it right is with a hardware/software solution - the best by consensus re: "bang for the buck" is the Gretag MacBeth Eye One Display, about $240. Check www.drycreekphoto.com for a very good overview of the available packages.
