I wouldn't go by anybody's recommendations. They all seem to have some good points and a whole lot of bad points. You just have to try to find the one that can handle your needs the best.
Right now I have two digital cameras, the Olympus 8080 wide angle, which is suppose to be a good camera and the new Fuji F10 which is a compact camera. The F10 has one of the finest sensors in it's class and can capture clean, almost noiseless images at ISO of 1600, -if you don't blow them up beyound 4"X6". Very good for night shooting without the use of flash. So, you get real nice natural indoor shots which is very good for indoor family gatherings, -and you can take a babies picture without scaring scaring.
It's a bummer outdoors, however. It has no veiwfinder, but instead a large 2 1/2" that you can't see through in the sunlight.
This means I use the Olympus 8080 wideangle for outdoors. I wish however that it was less bulky because I like to travel light as a tourist.
Good luck on your search. Here's a good place to start. Check the professional reviews and the consumer's opinions and also check out the different forums.
