Coincidentally I listened to a podcast last night about Polynesian navigation and the colonisiation of the Pacific.
Super interesting stuff.
But pertinent to this conversation -
1/ Maoris in New Zealand - hunted the giant Kia bird to extinction in just 100 years after arriving in the North Island in canoes.
2/ Rapa Nui (Easter Island) first settled by Polynesians who paddled from the Cook Islands est around 1200AD. First European contact 1722.
And in their time there, they had almost completely destroyed the ecosystem. Deforested to the point where they could no longer build a canoe - they were stuck there and the population dropped from est 15,000 to 2,000-3,000.
The point?
It seems that people are inherently greedy and stupid.
Even pre-industrial people.
Even people living extremely close and with and in nature :-(
Trying to hide from entropy
