well, Im almost back from vacation, Im back from MD with my new (used) motor. I have since discovered that this is a long shaft motor,it has like a 8 inch extention on the lower end that I have to remove to make it compatable with my boat.Question;
How much work and what is entailed in this procedure? I am asuming I will need to replace a shaft but my father says he thinks they just have a extention shaft that was installed when he had it converted to long from short. I do have the manual for this motor, it shows in very much detail how to do work on it, take it apart etc., but does not cover the subject of converting from long to short or short to long.Seams to me it should be a simple case of just take it apart and put it together without the extention. But I want some more info before I crack it open myself. I might just send it away to be done if it is too complex.
I should be back at home tommorrow,,( monday ) so catch you all later

Hey Ken welcome back! Hope you had a great vacation. Sorry cant help much with the shaft extension. What happens if you operate it like it is?
yep, Im back, I was at my girls house when I posed this question..
Had a pretty good trip, 1600 miles all said and told, at least half of which was crappy weather ranging from rain to hail to snow and back to rain, it didnt really affect our plans, could have been warmer but ow well..As far as what happens when you run a long shaft motor on a boat wanting a short shaft.. Although I have never actualy experienced this, As I understand it, having the shaft lower in the water then it should be will cause a loss of forward velocity. Something about some of the power being diverted to trying to pick the nose up instead of pushing forward. having the prop at the right depth is very important for max preformance.. It will run like that, it just wont run as good as it could like that. That and it will also affect my ability to run in shallow water by about 6 inches.
So how goes your prodject? I checked out your latest pix.. bout time to start a new thread on it anyway unless your finished, so Im looking forward to hearing how you are doing.
Did you drive on your trip? I know 1600 miles is a long ways. when on a long drive, i make sure I have a good supply of comedy tapes to listen to, the time flys by.
I will go ahead and start a new thread at homemade outboard
Yeah. we drove, or sould I say I drove. Pretty much shot down the coast, Stoped in DC and took some pictures, then to my dads in MD. ( he lives on a island ) After a day or 2 there I picked up the motor and headed for NW PA. visited with my girls daughter and her new son for a few days, then shot up to niagra falls before comming home. It took almost 5 hours to drive accrost NY alone. I90 has to be one of the longest most boring interstates this side of the USA. But aside from the crapy weather, The trip was fun. I got about 150 pictures with my digital camera, spent most of last night going over them and digitaly corecting light levels, and croping them to the size I need to email them.
