of 2 1/2 feet away from snake, simply by using a longer lens. In this case an 85mm f1.8 with a plus 3 close-up filter attached(Nikon 6T). Although a macro 80-200 would do it.

Macro's and Close-up's tend to automatically give a diffused background with narrow depth of field. The background in the snake pic is my studio's painted grey drop cloth used for portraits.
