Sorry if this is a way to basic question. This is my first post on this asylum. My question is simple. Is there a particular conversion table that can be used to determine how many pictures can fit on a given size memory card dependant on the resolution that is used? For example, how many pictures can fit on a 16Meg card if 3.1 megapixel resolution is used? (or 2megapixel, etc..)

Depends on picture content. On my basic 2M Canon, highest res settings, pics take from 400K (winter scenery) to 1200K (PCB closeup). Average is around 80 pics on a 64M card (incidentally, battery life is also 80-90 takes) - same as the camera manual says.
If you have any particular camera in mind, download user manual on the net, see if it has these estimates.
Thanks. I will see if the oweners manual is available to download. I was just trying to get an idea what to expect for memory usage. I am new to digital cameras and need the "crash course".

a print out.As a pro photog I am bothered by poor digital pictures printed by my Epson 1280, from a lo-rez card image. My Epson can at 260 dpi print out an indistinishable product than from a photo lab. What do I mean? A 16 meg card shot at raw or tiff -superfine setting gives me 16 shots.Enables me to print up to 11 x 14 inch wall photos. When same card is in fine setting I get 24 shots capable of great 5x7 or 8x10's.If I try to economize to get 32 or more shots from that 16 meg card I'm lucky to get wallet size or 4x6's.Good only for downloading on the internet, which look fine on today's monitors ,at 72 dpi.resolution.
