John,There are many that provide manual zoom... and also changeable lens'. Canon, Nikon, Kodak and others have "prosumer" and pro digital cameras that can handle normal 35mm lens'. i'll pass on mentioning Medium format cameras where you can buy/rent/lease a digital back. Very pricey! Try the Canon D30. Street priced around $2,300 with basic lens (your choice). If you do not need many features and desire "point and shoot" ease, than Circuit City and Best Buy has many models to choose from at attractive prices. Personally like the Olympus line of sub $1,000 cameras. Have owned a few over the years and they provided good digital photos and were solidly built/reliable.

...The 'digital' cameras I meant to
include are the kind found at Circuit City,et al...
not the "digital-back" modified 35mm cameras
such as the Nikon etc. you mentioned
---I meant the $400--to--$999
family of NON-modified, purely-digital
cameras---THOSE cameras except for
TWO $1100+ models--have yet to incorporate
a manual-zoom control to save on battery power...
It puts great stress on the resolution of the original CCD, and means thatyou can't really get the detail.
