Hi. I'm in need of some knowledgeable recommendations for a cheap
digital camera. I only plan on using it for internet auctions and
emailing pictures to friends. I would want to get a close up ability
for giving clear and crisp pictues of things like record labels, phono
cartridges, etc. Cheap, easy (as in any idiot can figure out how
to get the image into the computer in 5 mins.), cheap. Does not
need high resolution, obviously.
Thanks in Advance,
JRM.

You might have to shell out some cash for a camera that can take close up images. Those cheap fixed focus cameras under $200 just don't cut it, and you will never get an image of a phono cartraige with one of those things.
How many Ebay auctions have you seen with blown out over flashed masses of blur excuses for photos? Too damn many!
A decent Nikon CoolPix or Canon Elph digital, for example, will be over $500 or so.
You might want to go used, but look for something with good auto focus. I recall a Kodak dit cam from some years back that did well with close up. It was a $1,000 camera then but now should be very cheap since it wasn't a "mega pixel" camera. Fine resolution for internet use.Rather than spilling $500 on a dit cam, maybe you'll be better off sticking with film for now. You can order your prints to be digitized during processing for an extra few bucks. Kodak processing offers this service, with low rez scans perfect for internet use costing two or three bucks extra per roll.

I can only give general advice as I don't have a digital camera although I have used one. (an Olympus I think).
Most of the digital cameras on the market now offer very good picture quality. However quality of image still depends on more than one factor such as lens quality.
I would therefore go for one of the better makes such as Nikon, Canon, Olympus, etc as lens quality will be better and then look at close up facilities and the number of pixels used (the more the better). They all offer fairly cheap models now.
You should be able to derive a short list from this within your price range.
If you don't want to go for a mainstream manufacturer, then there are some models available which are branded products and thus cheaper, but still offer good quality. They may not have the same facilities for close-up etc so shop around.Hope this helps
