from the NY Times>>>Let me tease you first with this question: How much bigger can I print a 10-megapixel photo than a 5-megapixel photo?
Most people answer, "twice as big" or even "four times as big."
But they're wrong. In fact, doubling the megapixels of a photo actually lets you add only 20 percent more area to each edge.
Here's the math. A 5-megapixel photo might measure 1944 x 2592 pixels. When printed at, say, 180 dots per inch, that's about 11 by 14 inches.
A 10-megapixel photo (2736 x 3648 pixels), meanwhile, yields a 180-dpi print that's about 15 by 20 inches-under three inches more on each margin!<<<
Follow Ups:
An image is a two dimensional plane. Doubling the pixels allows you to increase the print size by 1.414 to keep the same resolution. To double the print size, you would need 4 times the pixels.
I tried to take some close ups of this rug without a Tripod and i can't do it.Its a Konica Minolta Damiage Z6 12X optical Zoom 6 mega pixels.Incredibly frustrating and i wondered if its just me drinking too much coffee..
If you can adjust the ISO setting (film speed if it were a film camera)to a higher rate you could then get faster shutter speeds. This would help to eliminate any lack of sharpness caused by hand shake.-Steve
