I have been looking around for a digital camera for a few days now. I seem to be very attracted to the Canon G6 and the Olympus C-7070. Both of them have good reviews. Since this is my first experience with digital cameras i was wondering if any of you had any experience with either one.I'm planning on using the camera for family gatherings, some outdoor photography, daughter's school recitals and to post items for sale on the net among other things. Do the wide angle on the Olympus tip the balance here or is Canon a superior performer ? You can email me directly if you feel you don't want to post your opinions here. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Much like audio, it depends on budget. I do not personally own a digital camera (yet...unless you count webcams) because I think my film cameras still give me better picture quality for money spent.I would normally recommend you get the camera with the best lens you can find in your budget, of course. But digital cameras have put another parameter into this. The CCD sensors and the software built into the cameras play a big part in camera selection now. Also the ease of use. Some cameras have so many features, you need a computer science degree to know how to take advantage of them all.
Canons are generally decent value for money. I've taken some pictures with Canon EOS 10D slr and have been quite please with them. However, with all those megapixels, you also need computer space to store all those pictures.
As time marches on, you'll probably find better pricing on digital cameras as the technology matures. I'm still waiting for the price of a Leaf-Aptus to come down....
I wouldn't go by anybody's recommendations. They all seem to have some good points and a whole lot of bad points. You just have to try to find the one that can handle your needs the best.
Right now I have two digital cameras, the Olympus 8080 wide angle, which is suppose to be a good camera and the new Fuji F10 which is a compact camera. The F10 has one of the finest sensors in it's class and can capture clean, almost noiseless images at ISO of 1600, -if you don't blow them up beyound 4"X6". Very good for night shooting without the use of flash. So, you get real nice natural indoor shots which is very good for indoor family gatherings, -and you can take a babies picture without scaring scaring.
It's a bummer outdoors, however. It has no veiwfinder, but instead a large 2 1/2" that you can't see through in the sunlight.
This means I use the Olympus 8080 wideangle for outdoors. I wish however that it was less bulky because I like to travel light as a tourist.
Good luck on your search. Here's a good place to start. Check the professional reviews and the consumer's opinions and also check out the different forums.
Vinylly,
Thanks for your advice, i really appreciate it. Anyways, i've been reading review after review lately and it seems that a high megapixel count is no guarantee of better photos. Based on that i have changed my perception and now i'm looking for a good pocket camera. It seems i have found one i like, the Fujifilm finepix E550. I found a great price from a retailer. Funny how some of this cameras are selling at higher prices on eBay. Maybe they are going overseas. Anyways, one last request, what's a good photo software for a beginner ? I figure the camera probably comes with one but i'm looking down the road. Thanks again.
I'm still a film buff trying to shoot digital. As a result I shoot digital like it was a film camera.
