Had a Canon S20 3.2 megapixel camera that was acting up. Today I received it's replacement, a Nikon Coolpix 8700.Went whole hog and bought the lens protector, adapter, and telephoto lens along with a 1 Gig Lexar CF card.
Only have taken a few photos but the color balance is amazing especially in RAW mode.
If I pop a decent shot I'll post it.

I'm also on the market for a new camera but I haven't taken the plunge yet. I'm leaning toward the Canon digital Rebel or the Nikon D70 but I'm interested in knowing what prompted your decision to go with the 8700. In the store, the SLRs seemed to start up faster with quicker autofocus and shutter responses, and the cost is similar. Did your brother steer you away from the digital SLRs? If so, what were his reasons? I am interested in your feedback and his experience. Thanks.
Were you swayed by a review?
Yes and no! I did read the dpreview review on the 8700. I replaced my Canon S20 because it took a whack in my suitcase and has been acting "funny". Like a Windows computer. Also, while before my need for a camera was strictly hobby, I now need to photograph small items in great detail such as electronic circuit boards.
dpreview gave the Nikon 8700 the "best in class" for macro. My brother works for a large camera shop in the midwest and he confirmed. He also can get all this stuff for me at cost which was a plus.
