Actually I was looking for a good wine to put in stew. As Emmil says, 'don't buy a cooking wine you wouldn't drink'. So, I was looking for a good Cabernet on the cheap side. I picked out a Washington State wine with a new label 'Red Diamond'. We drank what was left of the bottle after making the stew, and damn it!!! It's a very good wine. You'll find it at Safeway stores.
Follow Ups:
my neighbor (here in WA state) used to be the brand manager for Red Diamond..part of the huge St Michelle group of brands which itself is owned by US Tobacco (chewing tobacco). I've never tried Red Diamond but I was told that the wine has residual sugar (I assume it is added during blending)..try something from Columbia Crest...a few bucks more, but probably worth it...or look for Hogue or Sagelands.
Hogue Cab Sav,will check that one out. It's on sale for $9.95.
