Not his most well-known novel; that honor belongs to either "Winter's
Tale" or "A Soldier of the Great War", both extremely worth reading.
The first chapter of "Refiner's Fire deals with the voyage of the
Lindos Transit, a freighter loaded with desperate Jews from the wreck
of Europe after the war, and it's beaching on the shores of what was
to become Israel. It would make a great movie, far better than, say,
"Exodus." The role of the British in this incident is shameful beyond
