Costco chardonnay tasting...
Posted by mkuller on February 28, 2009 at 10:43:11:
...each spring, I buy a few $12 to $15 chardonnays from Costco to taste and determine which will be our summer house wine this year - my wife drinks chardonnay. Then I go back and buy a case.
Here is the ranking:
5. 2006 Raymond Napa Valley Reserve - this was the only one neither of us could drink and ended up pouring out. Had some off-tastes, needless to say.
4. 2006 Cambria Katherine's Vinyard - closed in, not much flavor
3. 2005 Meridian Santa Barbara County - right out of the refigerator, this one was an early favorite with a buttery flavor and a little fruit peeking out. As it warmed and opened up, some off-putting flavors emerged.
2. 2007 Wente Riva Ranch - last year this one won the competition but this year, there is an overpowering flavor of oak that drowns out much of the fruit. Gets a little better as it warms up.
1. 2006 Acacia Carneros - Closed in at first, this had the best balance of butter and fruit, even though it was a little weak in flavor.
Since the Acacia was the winner by default, I'll be picking up a couple of the $15 wines to compare against it soon.
