I walked up to the glass with the camera (old SRT 100) and metered the glass that way, then strolled back and TRIED to get a good composition. The columns in the church in this case were each directly IN FRONT of the windows, making direct-on just a bit tough.

A 4x5 with lots of back movement and a lens with a big image circle would be the way to go.

The flower is shot using a flash and a piece of kleenex tissue over the flash, in a darkish day at Traquair. That got me the necessary DOF and helped to put the background out.
