Digital Camera Battery Life Seems Insanely Short. ???

I'm trying out two inexpensive but well rated digital cameras - the Cannon Powershot A300 and the Kodak CX6330. Both are 3.2 megapixel. Both seem to take excellent pictures and have good feature sets. However, I am stunned by the insanely short battery life of each. For example, with 2 fresh AA alkalines in the A300, I'm lucky to get 10 photos using the flash but not even using the LED. I've heard these cameras eat batteries like crazy but I can't imagine you have to change batteries every five or six pictures or so. What's up with this? Is this normal or is there something wrong with these cameras? Both are new, right out of the box. Would using Ni rechargeables make a big difference?

Any guidance appreciated on this. Thanks!
